Der niederländische Maler Rembrandt Harmensz van Rijn was a Dutch painter. Already in lifetime, he was extremely successful and is regarded as the most important painter, graphic artist and draftsman of the Netherlands in the Baroque of the 17th century.

Rembrandt, whose physiognomy is sufficiently known today due to his numerous, mostly comic self-portraits, stays in his birthplace Leiden until he moves to Amsterdam in 1631. After a six-month apprenticeship with Pieter Lastman, Amsterdam's leading artist, he establishes his own workshop. With his very compelling portraits, the biblical historical scenes and large, almost scenic group portraits as well as numerous graphics, Rembrandt is soon a highly-coveted artist. In 1633, he marries Saskia van Uylenbourgh, together with whom he portrays himself, sometimes playing roles. In 1656, his second companion, Hendrickje Stoffels, experiences Rembrandt's financial bankruptcy. Deprived from his house, his private very large collections of art and rarities, whose pieces (costumes, mugs, etc.) are detailed in many of his works, the artist retreats more and more. The later works also bear witness to greater tranquility and thrift: impressive, psychologically penetrated scenes are represented by a few partially only isolated figures. Rembrandt is famous for his special way of using light, which mostly comes from the upper left into the picture and highlights the figures in front of a dark background.
