Pompeo Girolamo Batoni - Paintings
Pompeo Girolamo Batoni
was an Italian painter of the late Baroque and pioneer of Neoclassicism in Italy and is considered as the most important portrait painter of his time.
Born: 25 January 1708 in Lucca
Died: 04 February 1787 in Rome
After his training as a goldsmith in his father’s workshop, Pompeo Girolamo Batoni goes to Rome to study Raffael’s works and the ancient sculptures. In his quite pathetic and theatrical-looking paintings, he mainly deals with religious and mythological themes. Around the year 1748, he develops a new portrait style and, in doing so, he obtains a predominant position among the Roman painters.
