Marianne von Werefkin - Paintings

Marianne von Werefkin was a Russian painter of Expressionism who made numerous Expressionist artists known through her Munich Salon.
Born: 29 August 1860 (O.S.) in Tula, Russian Empire
Died: 06 February 1938 in Ascona, Switzerland
As a daughter of a Russian noble family, Marianne von Werefkin receives an extensive artistic education before she moves to Germany in 1896. In Munich, she quickly comes acquainted with other Expressionist artists who join the “Künstlervereinigung München” (Munich Association of Artists) in 1909 founded by her. In turn, this group is later the origin of the members of the movement “Der Blaue Reiter”. Werefkin herself is in contact with a great many Expressionist artists and presents her own works at public exhibitions. Her oeuvre still impresses today with its extreme colorfulness and narrative character.
