Jules Breton - Paintings

Jules Breton (full name: Jules Adolphe Aimé Louis Breton) was a French landscape painter of Realism.
Born: 01 May 1827 in Courrières (Pas-de-Calais), France
Died: 05 July 1906 in Paris, France
Jules Breton is educated in Paris, Ghent und Antwerp. In his early work, deals with the effects of the French Revolution. After that, he finds his true theme: landscape depictions idealizing rural life. Even though Breton does not stand out besides his two great painter colleagues Jean François Millet and Gustave Courbet, his landscape depictions show a certain lightness and a special, almost poetic sensitivity, using a special complexion. Even though Jules Breton remains loyal to the academic education, from 1860, he starts painting in open air as one of the first artists. His characters come from peasant life and are mainly depicted in a somehow idealized manner. However, all in all, his works are very pleasing and harmonious.
