John William Waterhouse - Paintings

John William Waterhouse was a major English painter of the 19th century. He was temporarily associated with the Pre-Raphaelite movement.
Born: 06 April 1849 in Rome, Papal States
Died: 10 February 1917 in London
John William Waterhouse is born in Rome where his family is living for some time, as his father studies art. Already very early in life, Waterhouse assists his father on the pictures and he discovers his artistic talents. After the family moved to London, he receives further training at the Royal Academy. Already three years after his studies, in 1874, he causes a stir with his first work “Sleep and Death”. The painter’s early work is still characterized by Alma-Tadema’s academic realism. John William Waterhouse is known for his mythological – romantic women’s figures, which he creates in the Pre-Raphaelite style.
