Jean Leon Gerome - Paintings

Jean-Léon Gérôme was one of France's most famous painters of Historicism of the 19th century. Due to his antiquating themes, he became the founder of the “Néo-Grecs”.

In addition to being trained in drawing by C.B. Cariage and receiving lessons in oil painting as well as studying at the École des Beaux-Arts, Jean-Léon Gérôme works in the studio of Paul Delaroche. At the age of 23, he becomes famous in the Paris Salon scene for his first painting. His decorative paintings convince his noble customers by their hidden idealized, antiquating eroticism. Even his oriental themes, which he increasingly turned to after several journeys, support his popularity. Gérôme's realistically painted genre scenes are tactically upgraded in his later work, as he involves the viewer in the narrative depictions, inviting him to discover the preceding history independently, as in the painting “Death of Cesar”.
