Ivan Aivazovsky - Paintings

Ivan Konstantinovich Aivazovsky was – already in life – an internationally famous Russian marine painter of Armenian parents. His style was the Romanticism of the 19th century.
Born: 17 June 1817 [O.S.] in Feodosia, Crimea, Russian Empire
Died: 19 April 1900 [O.S.] in Feodosia, Crimea, Russian Empire
Ivan Aivazovsky’s talent is discovered already before attending secondary school. He receives support by many Russian noblemen to be able to obtain an adequate education. Although his wish to be taught in Italy remains unfulfilled, Ivan Aivazovsky is for sure the most travelled Russian painter of the 19th century. From 1839, he starts travelling abroad and receives his first award in Rome. Sponsored by tsar Nicholas I., Ivan Aivazovsky settles in Saint Petersburg from 1844. As he is appointed main painter of the Russian navy staff, he thematically deals with contemporary battle scenes, which he partially attended in person. Already in 1887, he can look back on fifty years of activity comprising of about 4,000 works. All his life, the painter is supported by international aristocratic houses who also remain his main customers.
