David Teniers - Paintings

David Teniers the Younger was, next to Adriaen Brower, the most famous Flemish painter for peasant genre painting of the 17th century.
Born: 15 December 1610 in Antwerp
Died: 25 April 1690 in Brussels
After he having become an apprentice in his father's workshop, David Teniers receives his master craftsman’s diploma at the age of 22 and is accepted to the Guild of Saint Luke. In his early work, he paints genre pictures depicting the illustrious, rural peasants’ lives. In his humorous manner, his mostly small-format paintings remind of the style of Adriaen Brower. However, his paintings are far less coarse in color application and content. At the age of 30, David Teniers expands his thematic repertoire with religious depictions and landscapes. He also becomes increasingly secure in his own style. In 1665, Teniers founds an art academy in Brussels, where he has lived since the 1650s.
