Canaletto (was the son of a scene painter and had gotten in touch with decorative painting at early age. He was a well-known Italian landscape and vedute painter of the 18th century.

Canaletto received many important impulses for his scenically and architecturally exact cityscapes, by assisting his father Bernardo Canal. Before changing over to vedute paintings, he created the Capricci of Venice. Disposing of patrons during his whole life, from 1730 on, the painter not only worked for local aristocratic clients but also for travelers on the Grand Tour who wanted to take memories to their home countries from Venice as a very important stop during their educational journeys. Due to a lack of orders because of the Austrian Succession War, in 1746, Canal travelled to England for ten years, where he created several drawings and etchings of London cityscapes. The artist made very detailed sketches to make his paintings as true to detail as possible. Already during lifetime, he was much appreciated, which is reflected by the high number of copies painted from his works. |
