Berthe Morisot was an important French painter and illustrator of Impressionism. She got familiar with painting from her childhood on through her artistically gifted family.

Berthe Morisot is introduced to art by her grandfather, Jean-Honoré Fragonard. She receives her artistic training by Jean-Baptiste Camille Corot, who also convinces her to exhibit two of her works in the Salon. Through this relationship, she becomes acquainted with Édouard Manet, whose brother Eugène becomes her husband in 1877. Berthe Morisot, who devotes herself to the Plein air painting, is the first female artist among the Impressionists to exhibit her works. Due to her ties with the Impressionist group of artists, Berthe is often asked to pose, just like her sister Edma Morisot, who is also artistically active. Thus, there are many portraits of the artist, most of them made by Manet. She also paints portraits and family scenes in bright tones herself, by which she gains success beyond the borders of France.
