John Singleton Copley gilt als bedeutendster amerikanischer Maler von Historienbildern und Portraits des Realismus in der Kolonialzeit.

Der Autodidakt John John Singleton Copley, der bei seinem Stiefvater Peter Pelham in die Lehre geht und sich sonst an Drucken italienischer Meister schult, steigt mit seinen Gemälden zu einem, selbst in Europa, gefragten Portraitisten auf. Nachdem er sich in Europa an Historiengemälden und Bildern mit religiösen Themen versucht hat, läßt sich John Singleton Copley ab 1775 in London nieder. Hier macht er sich vor allen Dingen mit seinen psychologisch durchdrungenen Gruppenportraits einen Namen. 		John Singleton Copley
