John Constable ist ein in Frankreich hochgeschätzter englischer Landschaftsmaler der Romantik des 19. Jahrhunderts.
geboren am 11. Juni 1776 in East Bergholt, Suffolk
gestorben am 31. März 1837 in London
Das Frühwerk von John Constable, der unterstützt von dem Kunstsammler Sir George Beaumont ein Studium bei Benjamin West an der Royal Academy absolviert, besteht vorerst aus Historienbildern und einigen religiösen Arbeiten bevor er zu seiner eigentlichen Gattung der Landschaftsmalerei gelangt. In seinen Wolkenstudien, die ab 1821 entstehen, zeigt sich seine genaue Beobachtungsgabe der Natur. Auch wenn seine Bilder inhaltlich der Romantik verhaftet bleiben, findet John Constable durch die Arbeit mit dem Spachtel und die große Bewegtheit in seinem Duktus zu einer fast impressionistischen Malweise.
