William Powell Frith - Peintures
William Powell Frith (9 janvier 1819, Aldfield, Yorks – 2 novembre 1909, Londres), peintre anglais de l´époque victorienne, d´abord opposé à une carrière d´artiste, il est plus tard honoré de nombreuses médailles pour son œuvre. William Powell Frith est poussé par ses parents, grands amateurs d´art, à une carrière de peintre. Il se forme entre autres à l´Académie royale de Londres. Il cherche d´abord son style dans la peinture de portraits et la peinture de genre puis, vers 1850, il commence à se passionner pour les scènes de foule. Il produit alors des tableaux panoramiques montrant des rassemblements humains lors de festivités ou d´activité de loisirs. Doté de nombreux prix nationaux, il reçoit également très vite les honneurs internationaux. Ses peintures de grand format plaisent par leur caractère enjoué et narratif. Jusque dans ses œuvres tardives, William Powell Frith reste fidèle au style de l´art victorien et critique vertement les tendances nouvelles incarnées par les artistes préraphaélites et impressionnistes.
