Joseph Wright of Derby (Derby, 3 septembre 1734 – 29 août 1797) – peintre de paysages et portraitiste anglais à l´époque de la révolution industrielle.
Joseph Wright of Derby apprend la peinture de portraits auprès de Thomas Hudson et débute rapidement une carrière de portraitiste. Il développe bientôt une manière originale en utilisant la lumière pour donner à ses portraits et paysages une atmosphère toute de mystère, avec des effets de contraste clair-obscur très travaillés. Cependant, il se passionne avant tout pour les sciences de la nature et commence à peindre des tableaux dans lesquels il met en scène des sujets scientifiques (Expérience de l´oiseau dans la pompe à air », « Un philosophe discourant sur le planétarium »). Là aussi, il traite en virtuose les effets de lumière pour donner une profondeur dramatique à ses représentations. Il est le premier peintre anglais à illustrer l´état des connaissances scientifiques de son temps et à donner témoignage des découvertes du XVIIIème siècle.
