Giovanni Francesco Guercino (de son vrai nom Giovanni Francesco Barbieri) est un peintre et dessinateur italien majeur du Baroque.
Baptisé le 08/02/1591 à Cento.
Mort le 22/12/1666 à Bologne.
D’un point de vue artistique, Giovanni Francesco Guercino connait dans sa vie une évolution considérable en ce qui concerne sa peinture. Contrairement à ses premières œuvres, qui se distinguent de par les douces nuances d’ombre et lumière, les œuvres qu’il réalise en s’inspirant des peintures de Ludovico Carraci et Palma il Vecchio sont marquées par la manière de plus en plus dramatique dont Giovanni Francesco Guernico représente la lumière, ainsi que par leurs couleurs de plus en plus sombres. Tandis qu’en 1621, le pape Grégoire XV appelle le peintre à venir à Rome, celui-ci y trouve de nouvelles sources d’inspiration et se consacre dès lors à une façon de peindre plutôt linéaire.
