Fréderic Edwin Church fait partie de la seconde génération de la Hudson River School, école fondée par Thomas Cole, qui s‘est donnée pour tâche de représenter la beauté romantique de la Nouvelle Angleterre. Ses peintures très détaillées de l’Ouest américain qui vient d’être conquiert fascinent de par leurs couleurs extrêmes et de par leur luminosité presque pathétique, censée faire ressortir la paix et la beauté qui dominent dans un paysage pas si paisible qu’il en a l’air.
