After his training received from the portrait painter Hermann Becker, Wilhelm Leibl, studied at the Munich Academy. The artist, who already reached wide popularity at the age of 22, taught himself by means of old Dutch masters. Characterized by their big attention to detail and by an impressive realism, Leibl's paintings fascinate artist's fellow painters so much that they founded the so-called Leibl circle, after his stay in Paris in the years 1868 to 1870, aiming at realistic plein-air painting. This group included painters like Theodor Alt, Hans Thoma, Carl Schuch and Johann Sperl broke up in 1873 with Wilhelm Leibl, 's departure to Munich. His most famous work called "Three Women in the Church" was created in the years 1878 - 1882 and is a masterpiece of German Realism. |
