Matthias Gruenewald - Paintings

Matthias Grünewald (probably also worked under the name Mathis Gothart Nithart) was the most important German painter and draftsman of the expressive late Gothic besides Albrecht Dürer, with whom he painted the so-called Heller altar.
Born between 1470 and 1480 in Würzburg.
Died in August 1528 in Halle on the Saale.
Matthias Grünewald, who became a court painter of Archbishop Uriel von Gemmingen in Aschaffenburg in 1509, created his most important work in two years (1513 - 1515): the "Isenheim Altar", depicting the incarnation, death and resurrection of Christ. Despite his special painting style, i.e. monumental figures and expressive colors, Matthias Grünewald stuck to the medieval tradition. Only with the vile hell beings appearing on the altar table "The Temptation of Saint Anthony", he used his inventiveness reminding of Hieronymus Bosch.
