Jan Vermeer van Delft - Paintings

Jan Vermeer, whose full name was Johannes Vermeer van Delft – traditionally named after his birthplace – was a famous Dutch painter of Baroque.
Born: 31 October 1632 in Delft
Died: 15 December 1675 in Delft
Jan Vermeer, of whom little is known about his youth, most likely receives an education in the artisan craft workshop of his father, who is engaged in the trade of art and silk fabrics. According to his bourgeois clientele, Vermeer’s illuminated interiors’ scenes deal with the bourgeois everyday life. Influenced by Venetian art, the artist creates colorfully harmoniously balanced depictions of a thematically closed rooms. In their simple actions, the contemplative figures of his 36 works can be partly understood as allegories of virtues. Vermeer’s fame is based on his thrifty compositions and the mastery of lighting, but there are also hidden mysteries remaining behind pictures like “The Girl with the Pearl Earring”.
