Carl Theodor Reiffenstein was a German artist at the time of Romanticism, whose work is mainly characterized by landscape depictions and architectural etchings.
Born: 12 January 1820 in Frankfurt am Main
Died: 06 December 1893 in Frankfurt am Main
Carl Theodor Reiffenstein stems from a financially well-off family. Already during his childhood, he comes into contact with painting. His education is partly autodidactic, partly he gets it from various Frankfurt artists, through whose artistic work, he comes into contact with decorating and theater painting. So, already as an adolescent, he possesses a remarkable artistic talent. Driven by the desire to study architecture, Carl Theodor Reiffenstein is educated at the Staatliche Hochschule für Bildende Künste in Frankfurt am Main, where he soon changes his education into the direction of painting. His stylish, architecturally precise, dreamy landscapes, which he creates both in watercolor and in oil, show motifs, preferably from Hesse, but also from all over Germany, today’s Netherlands and Italy, where he makes a name for himself during extensive study trips and is granted several awards.
