Anselm Feuerbach - Paintings
Anselm Feuerbach was paid only little attention during his lifetime. Today, however, he is considered one of the most important German artists of the 19th century.

Anselm Feuerbach studies at the Düsseldorf Art Academy and is also taught by a variety of painters. After having refined his artistic skills in Munich under the popular portrait painter Karl Rahl, Anselm Feuerbach goes to Paris to take lessons by Thomas Couture, who was a highly-esteemed painter of that time. Influenced by these two artists, portraits and idealized, allegorical and mythological paintings are produced. More famous, however, is Feuerbach's late work, which is characterized by a balanced, discreetly colored and large-scaled depictions. After stays in Venice and Rome, the artist lives in Vienna for a few years. But he does not get enough attention to be able to earn a good living from that. Feuerbach's figures are painted in the neo-classical style and should rather be categorized into Romanticism considering their solitary, self-centered and reflective poses. Because of this ambiguity, the painter may have found it difficult to assert himself in the art market, during his lifetime. 		Anselm Feuerbach
