Ivan Aivazovsky ist ein zu seinen Lebzeiten bereits international berühmter russischer Marinemaler des Klassizismus im 19. Jahrhundert.

Ivan Aivazovsky, dessen Talent bereits vor dem Besuch des Gymnasiums erkannt wird, bekommt Unterstützung von zahlreichen russischen Adeligen, um eine angemessene Ausbildung zu erlangen. Der Wunsch in Italien ausgebildet zu werden scheitert zwar, dennoch ist Ivan Aivazovsky wohl der meist bereiste russische Maler des 19. Jahrhunderts. Ab 1839 beginnt er ins Ausland zu reisen und erhält in Rom seine erste Auszeichnung. Protegiert von Kaiser Nikolaus I. lässt sich Ivan Aivazovsky ab 1844 in Petersburg nieder. Da er zum Hauptmaler des Marinestabes ernannt wird, beschäftigt er sich thematisch mit zeitgenössischen Schlachtszenen, denen er zum Teil selbst beiwohnt. Bereits im Jahr 1887 kann Ivan Aivazovsky auf eine fünfzigjährige, ca. 4000 Werke umfassende künstlerische Tätigkeit zurückblicken. Zeit seines Lebens wird der Künstler von internationalen Adelshäusern unterstützt, die auch seine Hauptauftragsgeber bleiben. Ivan Aivazovsky
