Giovanni Francesco Guercino (heißt eigentlich Giovanni Francesco Barbieri) ist ein wichtiger italienischer Maler und Zeichner des Barock.

gestorben am 22. Dezamber 1666 in Bologna
Giovanni Francesco Guercino macht in seinem Leben eine beachtliche malerische Entwicklung durch. Im Gegensatz zu seinem Frühwerk, welches durch die weiche Nuancierung von Licht und Schatten besticht, erfährt sein Werk durch die Bilder Ludovico Carraccis und Palma il Vecchios eine zunehmende Dramatisierung des Lichts und eine starke Abdunkelung der Farbe. In Rom, wohin der Maler 1621 von Papst Gregor XV berufen wird, bekommt Giovanni Francesco Guercino neue Impulse und widmet sich fortan einer eher linearen Malweise.
