Gerard van Honthorst (auch Gerrit oder Gherardo delle Notte, aufgrund seiner Nachtszenen, genannt) ist der bedeutendste niederländische Caravaggist des Barock im 17. Jahrhunderts.

gestorben am 17. April 1656 in Utrecht
Nach seiner Ausbildung bei Abraham Bloemaert geht Gerard van Honthorst 1610 nach Rom, wo er das Werk Caravaggio´s kennen lernt, dessen Stil er in seine Malerei adaptiert. Während die Thematik seines Frühwerks noch, von indirektem Licht beleuchtete, Nachtszenen behandelt, wechselt Gerard van Honthorst 1622 zu Genrebildern und drei Jahre darauf sogar zu mythologischen Darstellungen im klassizistischen Stil. Genauso vielseitig wie sein Stil sind auch seine Auftraggeber: so ist er, bevor er ab 1628 am Londoner Hof tätig ist, als Maler am Hof von Prinz Frederik Hendrik von Oranien beschäftigt, um im Jahre 1637 wieder in die Niederlande zu ziehen und für den Statthalter von Den Haag zu arbeiten.
