Eugene Boudin, der gern als Marinemaler bezeichnet wird, gilt als Vertreter des französischen frühen Impressionismus.

Das Werk von Eugene Boudin besteht größtenteils aus stimmungsvollen Meer- und Strandansichten unter einem in verschiedenen Grautönen changierenden Himmel. Von seinen Zeitgenossen Gustave Courbet und Jean-Francois Millet, zu denen er durch Ausstellungen in seinem Papiergeschäft freundschaftliche Beziehungen aufbaut, wird ihm ein besonderes Gespür für die Gestaltung von Licht und melancholischen Stimmungen zugeschrieben.
