Max Liebermann - Paintings

Max Liebermann was one of the great German painters of the modern age, together with Leibl and Lembruck. He was chairman of the Berlin Secession and known for his own individual impressionism.
Born: 20 July 1847 in Berlin
Died: 08 February 1935 in Berlin
Max Liebermann’s parents are wealthy Jews. Already at young age, he gets a first drawing training before attending the Weimar School of Art. Inspired by a first trip to France and the Netherlands, Liebermann spends some time in Paris in the 1870s. His very naturalistic style is influenced by Millet, whose monumental motifs of the rural life are transferred by Max Liebermann onto the Dutch landscapes, which he visits annually. In Munich, where the painter lives for some time from 1878 onwards, he ties up with Leibl and Lembruck. He also gets acquainted with French Impressionism. Accordingly, his ductus became more and more impulsive and far-reaching in the now following years of his most famous period. This time, Liebermann spends in Berlin again, becoming one of the most coveted German painters of the pre-war period as co-founder of the Berlin Secession.
