Lesser Ury was a talented draftsman of nudes, and one of the first painters to bring French Impressionism to Germany.

Before getting acquainted with Impressionism in Paris, Lesser Ury, who stems from a poor family, studies at the Düsseldorf Academy and in Brussels. Here, he first of all gets acquainted with the drawing of nudes, which he is going to resume in a later period. For the time being Lesser Ury goes to Berlin and paints impressionistic city and landscape views. He is the only painter there to do so. Only in the 1920s, the confessing Jew receives recognition. The emerging national socialism as well as health problems are, however, reflected in his otherwise very bright, colorful work. Lesser's oeuvre, half of which is destroyed in the Second World War, still comprises some outstanding night images of his last years of life.
