John William Godward - Paintings

John William Godward was an English painter of Neo-Classicism. Stylistically and thematically he can be compared to the painting of Sir Lawrence Alma Tadema.
Born: 09 August 1861 in London
Died: 13 December 1922 in London
John William Godward is taught by his friend William Clarke Wontner. He paints detailed, small-scaled depictions of ancient contents, in which a woman is usually portrayed in elegiac mood, gazing over a Mediterranean landscape. This is also the case in his painting “The Belvedere”, which is produced during his nine-year stay in Rome. The painting is awarded with a medal. Already in this phase, he is living rather in secret so that only little is known about his private circumstances.
