Iwan Nikolajewitsch Kramskoi - Paintings
Ivan Nikolaevich Kramskoi was a Russian art critic, painter and graphic artist in the late 19th century, who was very committed to making Russian art known in the province.
Born: 1837 in Ostrogoshsk
Died: 1887 in Saint Petersburg
Ivan Kramskoi first learns to paint sacred images before he is admitted to the Academy of Arts in Saint Petersburg at the age of 19. For these religious works, he is awarded the Small and Large Silver Medal as well as the small Gold Medal already as a pupil. In 1864, he is the founder of a protest act against the Academy's art conception, which is supposed to lead to a new democratic art, but is ultimately also the origin of propagandist tendencies. Together with several fellow painters, he founds the Peredvizhniki, which set up joint travelling exhibitions to express their protest absolutist Russia with their realistically painted art. Ivan Nikolaevich Kramskoi, who provides this group with pictures until his death, also acquires international fame with his paintings, which in later works, consist of portraits and monumental works.
