Eugen Bracht was an important Swiss-born German landscape painter, whose painting style changed during his lifetime from romantic via religious-illusionistic to impressionistic.

Eugen Bracht turns to painting in two attempts. After a first education at the Grand Ducal School of Art in Karlsruhe and some artistic works in the 1860s, he works as a seller for wool for ten years. He is also interested in the young medium of photography. In 1775, the artist resumes his studies and graduates in Karlsruhe, this time under the Norwegian landscape painter Hans Fredrik Gude. With barely 40 years of age, Bracht undertakes a journey to the Orient, which provides him with motives for his landscape depictions. In addition to awards and several orders, the artist is entrusted with a teaching assignment at the Berlin Academy of Art. In the 1890s, Eugen Bracht is also very popular in the European neighboring countries and gets many orders for large panoramas. In addition to that, he is overwhelmed with awards and appointed honorary member at several art schools. At the age of 70, he has reached his climax of life regarding painting, now producing impressionistic landscapes.
