Thomas Cole was educated as an artist as well in Europe as also in the United States of America. Influenced by the works of Joseph Mallord William Turner, Nicolas Poussin and Claude Lorrain, he begins to focus on the depiction of panoramic landscapes sunk in peaceful beauty. In 1825, he founded the Hudson River School in New York, which made a practice of including literary content in the heroic interpretation of the New England landscapes. In his later work, Thomas Cole's otherwise peaceful landscape pictures appear more laden with mystic. |
