Sanford Robinson Gifford, who is involved in the founding of the Metropolitan Museum, was a well-known American landscape painter and member of the Hudson River School.
Born on July 10, 1823 in Greenfield / New York.
Died on August 29, 1880 in New York, NY.
After finishing an insufficient study, which is why he is considered rather a self-taught, Sanford Robinson Gifford undertook several trips through the United States in order to paint landscapes. Further trips also through Europe bring him closer to this genre, by which he soon gained national notoriety. The Barbizon School, whose artists he met during a trip with his fellow painters Albert Bierstadt and Worthington Whittredge, also has great influence on Gifford's artistic work. Because of his romantic, light-like landscapes, he is, however, usually attributed to the Hudson River School, though his style has some unusual characteristics. |
