Gerard David, a teacher of Joos van Cleve and Joachim Patinir, is counted among the most important panel painters in Bruges.
Born around 1460 in Oudewater near Gouda.
Died on August 13, 1523 in Bruges.
Educated in Holland, Gerard David settled in Bruges from 1484. There are only three works, of which can be proven that they were created by him as they contain dates and signatures. His panel paintings stand out by the very plastic figures involved in clear actions. After traveling to Italy, his work showed influences by Quentin Massys. He increasingly worked with cooler colors and his paintings show a still greater reduction of the image elements. |
