Fra Angelico (actually called Guido di Piero, after he entered the Dominican Order, also known as Beato Angelico) was one of the first important painters of the Florentine Renaissance.
Born around 1395 in Vicchio di Mugello near Florence.
Died on February 18, 1455 in Rome.
Fra Angelico's deeply religious early work is characterized by the clear simplicity of the picture structure and the picturesque subtlety of the figures. From 1447, he painted for the papal court and developed a special feeling for space and surface using new forms of the Renaissance style. Compared to his earlier works as the frescoes in the monastery of San Marco, his figures appear in a new monumentality and unity on later frescoes found in the Cappella Niccolina and in the cathedral of Orvieto. |
