Edmund Friedrich Kanoldt - Paintings

Edmund Friedrich Kanoldt was a German illustrator and landscape painter of the 19th century. An extract of his work can be seen at the museum in Weimar.

Died: 27 June 1904 in Bad Nauheim
Before being educated in painting in 1864 in Weimar by the landscape painter Friedrich Preller, Edmund Friedrich Kanoldt pursues as much a down-to-earth profession as his father, who was a pharmacist, as he undergoes a four-year apprenticeship as a bookseller. After he completing this, he goes to Rome where stays for three years. After a short period in Munich, he returns to Rome from 1874 onwards. Kanoldt's work, which includes historical landscapes in a linear style, is heavily influenced by his first teacher and does not change until 1875, when being taught by his second trainer, Ferdinand Keller. His painting gets softer, more atmospheric and more colorful under the influence of the historical painter Keller who is based in Karlsruhe. Edmund Friedrich Kanoldt’s themes are concentrated on the mythology of classical antiquity. Award-winning works like “Odysseus on the Goat Hunt” and “Echo and Narcissus” are created. But the artist is also a sought-after illustrator, which can be seen in books of William Shakespeare, Theodor Storm and Joseph von Eichendorff as well as in a Goethe-Schiller edition.
