Charles Theodore Frere - Paintings

Charles Theodore Frère, whose oeuvre is marked by his many trips, was regarded a renowned painter, lithographer and draftsman in the French salons of around 1870.
Born on June 21, 1814 in Paris.
Died on March 24, 1888 in Paris.
Charles Theodore Frère's life was characterized by extensive traveling activities, within both Europe and the Orient. Longer stays in Egypt and Turkey enabled him to paint paintings with Oriental motifs, which enjoyed great popularity in the salons of Paris. Apart from the latter mentioned subjects, he also painted city and landscapes, genres and interiors. Charles Theodore Frère's particular focus was on the play of light. He painted wide-range landscapes in the dawn or illuminated by the setting sun. Honored by royal principals, he met renowned artists like Jean-León Gérôme and Charles Blanc during his trips. He received numerous international awards and, fostered by his friendship with the American art dealer George Lucas, he also gained popularity in the United States.
