Sir Lawrence Alma Tadema lived in England at the height of his success. That is why he is considered as a famous Anglo-Dutch painter of Realism.
Born on January 08, 1836 in Dronryp near Leeuwarden.
Died on June 26, 1912 in Wiesbaden.
After his apprenticeship at the Academy of Antwerp, Sir Lawrence Alma Tadema found his way towards ancient history paintings with the help of his painting friend, Louis de Taeye. Right from the start of his first exhibition in 1857, he becomes quickly known in his home country and abroad, receiving many awards. At the beginning of the 1870s, inspired by study trips, Tadema focusses on the Greek and Egyptian thematic areas, which makes him internationally successful. In 1870, the artist moves to London. With his technical masterful and very pleasing history paintings exact in detail, he became a fixture of the annual exhibitions of the Royal Academy. In the year 1899, he even receives knighthood. Besides some watercolors, Tadema's work also comprises a few portraits.
