Sir Frank Dicksee was already born into a family of artists. During his whole lifetime, his style can be described as Late-Victorian. He was educated at the Royal Academy of Arts and he remained in touch with this institution for the rest of his life. In addition to his activities as a painter, he also designed templates for stained-glass windows and illustrated books. His devotion for the latter activity is also reflected by his passion for painting thematic literary figures of the 19th century. His paintings are full of decoration and splendor as well as melodramatic pathos. Dicksee is frequently thematically classified among the Pre-Raphaelites. His work, for which he was showered with medals and titles, does only show little stylistic changes until his death.
