Pietro Longhi - Paintings

Pietro Longhi (real name Pietro Falca) was, like his son Alessandro Longhi, whom he educated, a recognized Venetian genre painter of the Rococo.
Born in 1702 in Venice.
Died on May 08, 1785 in Venice.
After his trainings under Antonio Balestra and the Bologna-based painter Giuseppe Crespi, Pietro Longhi tried his luck as a history painter. Because he was not successful with these paintings, he specialized in genre scenes. Pietro Longhi became known for his extremely humorous popular scenes. Often, his very detailed paintings appear like small stage scenes, which was due his close connection to the poet Carlo Goldoni. His paintings often depict compositions of acting figures, which were not typical from an art-historical point of view. For this reason, they may be labeled as capricci.
