Philipp Otto Runge - Paintings
Philipp Otto Runge was, after his beginnings in Classicism, one of the most important German painters and draftsman of Romanticism.
Born: 23 July 1777 in Wolgast near Greifswald
Died: 02 December 1810 in Hamburg
After an apprenticeship as a merchant, Philipp Otto Runge attends several art academies. His early work is inspired by his neoclassical training, which he receives, among others, from the portrait painter Anton Graff. Runge is not able to properly assert himself among the artists of his time. He starts to implement his own subjects with his own new concept of light and color design. In the context of romantic painting, he tries to transfer his emotions into landscape depictions. The famous painting “The Morning” is part of the never-completed cycle “Four Times”, which connects the for stages of man’s life to the four seasons of a year. In addition to this work, Philipp Otto Runge creates many portraits. 		Philipp Otto Runge
