Otto Mueller is regarded as a significant German painter of Expressionism. From 1910 to 1913, he was a member of the artist group “Brücke” (Bridge).

His friends also name Otto Mueller the “Gypsy Painter” because of his preferred type of man for his motifs. He receives an initial training in lithography, before he attends both the Dresden and the Munich Academy. Mueller's paintings, which are usually composed in muted, harmonic color shades on coarse plucking, show thematically the oneness of man and nature. Even in his expressionist phase as a member of the “Brücke”, Mueller's personal style is clearly distinguished from the group style of his fellow colleagues, due to the absence of complementary contrasts. Even after the First World War and the disbandment of the “Brücke” in 1913, Otto Mueller remains true to his style.
