Leonardo da Vinci - Paintings

Leonardo da Vinci, was a genius of his century, also nicknamed "uomo universale". Besides Raphael and Michelangelo, he is considered an outstanding painter, draftsman, architect, sculptor, engineer and natural scientist of the Italian Renaissance.
Born on April 15, 1452 near Vinci, Tuscany.
Died on May 02, 1519 on Cloux Castle near Amboise.
Just like the famous painters Sandro Botticelli and Lorenzo di Credi, Leonardo da Vinci received his education as a painter and sculptor from Andrea del Verrocchio, whose style was still influential for his early work. Despite of this, already in this period, his few paintings were already coated with the "sfumato", which was typical from Leonardo da Vinci. Around 1499, after working for Duke Lodovico il Moro of Milan, Leonardo da Vinci returned to Florence. Around 1513 he worked for Giuliano dé Medici in Rome. From 1517 until his death, he was serving the French king Francis I, for whom he mainly worked as a scientist. In addition to his two major works "The Last Supper", which was painted from 1495 to 1497 and "Mona Lisa", his legacy consists of a vast number of drawings and manuscripts, showing da Vinci's scientific enthusiasm by means of numerous illustrations. The few paintings by Leonardo da Vinci were considered as unparalleled masterpieces already during the artist's lifetime. The mysterious smile of the unearthly-looking "Mona Lisa" still astounds the world to date.
