John Emms grows up in an artist family. His father Henry William Emms is also an active artist. After initial attempts to paint genre scenes, John Emms soon specializes in depicting hunting scenes. Due to the aristocracy’s predilection for this activity, the artist is given the opportunity to offer his haunting depictions of dogs and horses to aristocrats who are willing to buy them. His great popularity can be explained with the fact that he can convey not only the dog's breed character but also the individuality every single animal by means of his paintings. But also in this area, competitors establish and make John Emms’ life hard, adding problems to his certain tendency to leading an exuberant life. Thus, he has difficulties to maintain his standard of living and his financial debts grow.
