Isaac van Ostade - Paintings

Isaac van Ostade was, like his brother Adriaen van Ostade, a renowned Dutch painter of still lifes and peasant landscapes in the middle of the 17th century.
Born: 02 June 1621 in Haarlem
Died: 16 October 1649 in Haarlem
Isaac van Ostade, who is trained in his painting by his older brother Adriaen, is a highly productive painter who lives in Haarlem and creates 350 paintings. While his early work is still influenced by his brother, Isaac van Ostade soon develops his own style, which is characterized by an earthen light-dark painting in the style of Rembrandt. At the age of 18, the painter finishes his first painting: a still life of a slaughtered pig. While this is his favorite subject in his youth, his preference changes visibly to external depictions with a lot of rural surroundings and small but numerous figures, followed by winter landscapes. In the 17th century, rural depictions are very popular among city dwellers. They enjoy the vivid, sometimes naive, tumultuous peasants whose lives seem to have a great deal of freedom and contentment. Isaac van Ostade fulfills this need sufficiently, for example, with his wintry amusement on a frozen lake.
