Gustave Courbet was a French portrait, still life and landscape painter and considered one of the originators of Realism and one of the pioneers of Impressionism.
Born on June 10, 1819 in Ornans near Besançon.
Died on December 31, 1877 in La-Tour-de-Peilz near Vevey, Switzerland.
Self-taught Gustave Courbet influenced the Impressionist painters in an important way by the impasto-like color application and the realistic, richly detailed presentation of his paintings. He mainly dealt with themes from everyday life, which reflected the prevailing zeitgeist. In doing so, he gained growing popularity in Belgium, England and, above all, in Germany, whilst he remained uninteresting in France for a long time, due to his academy and history-hostile attitude.
