Giovanni Battista Tiepolo was little appreciated in Classicism, the period which followed Baroque. Nowadays, he is regarded as the most important Venetian painter of the late Baroque.

Died: 27 March 1770 in Madrid
Giovanni Battista Tiepolo is already well-known and popular for his early work period. He is taught by the sought-after Venetian painter Gregorio Lazzarini. Inspired by Lazzarini’s dark style, the figures of his first frescoes for churches and nobility palaces still show typical baroque gestures. In his paintings and frescoes, Giovanni Battista Tiepolo reproduces both religious and mythological allegorical themes. Due to his great popularity, the artist, who also occupies his two sons, receives orders for the palaces of Udine, Milan and Venice. When contemplating his most famous work “The Painting of the Staircase of the Würzburg Residenz” as an example, a change to a brighter, almost colorful complexion is visible in Tiepolo's style. Subsequently, the artist is appointed to the court of Madrid, where he is to paint the ceiling of the throne room. But over there, Giovanni Battista Tiepolo is not granted the same supremacy as in Italy. 		Giovanni Battista Tiepolo
