Francesco Hayez - Paintings

Francesco Hayez was a significant Venetian painter of Historicism. By the success of his idol Antonio Canova, he was inspired to create his very own style.
Born: 10 February 1791 in Venice
Died: 21 December 1882 in Milan
Just like his later promoter Antonio Canova, Francesco Hayez comes from a humble origin. He is, however, blessed with a lot of talent and an uncle who has a high appreciation of art, who arranges for him getting drawing lessons as a seven-year-old. Through a scholarship to Rome, he gets under the protectorate of Antonio Canova and from then on, he orientates himself to Canova’s neo-classical works. In addition, he remains linked to the older Venetian painting style and soon develops an interesting stylistic combination of both. Francesco Hayez is not only significant for his romantic style, but also a talented portrait painter whose clients include many royal houses.
