Charles Henri Joseph Leickert was a recognized Belgian painter of Dutch landscapes of Realism, known best for his winterly cityscapes.

Charles Henri Joseph Leickert takes private drawing and painting lessons with three teachers. One of them is the well-known Bartholomeus van Hove, whose main themes are romantic cityscapes. In addition to this teacher, who has taught a variety of students, Charles Leickert is also trained by the romantic landscape painter Wijnand Nuijen and the Dutch landscape painter Andreas Schelfhout. The latter is highly inspiring for his artistic work. Like Schelfhout, Charles Leickert also paints atmospheric winter landscapes. But also, the architectural works and models of his teachers are expressed in Leickert’s cityscapes. Staying true to the themes covered, the artist subsequently lives in two cities. At the age of 25, he moves to The Hague for seven years. From 1849, he settles down in Amsterdam for 34 years. A travel, which he begins after 1888, takes him to France, Italy and Germany, where he dies in Mainz. |  |
