Anthonis van Dyck, a portraitist and history painter, is considered among the most important Flemish painters of the Baroque, just like Peter Paul Rubens.
Born on March 22, 1599 in Antwerp.
Died on December 09, 1641 in Blackfriars in London.
Already with 19 years of age, Anthonis van Dyck was already admitted as master to the Antwerp Guild of Saint Luke, before working in the studio of Peter Paul Rubens as co-worker and student. Influenced by a trip to Italy, he developed the representative portraits of the nobility, affecting the later art of portrait painting in an important way. Draped in front of curtains or special architectural columns, he painted members of the upper nobility in half-figure in soft warm colors. In 1632, after having been in the services of Archduchess Isabella as a painter, and after becoming governor of the Netherlands, he was appointed court painter to Charles ? in London.
