Alphonse de Neuville - Paintings

Alphonse-Marie-Adolphe de Neuville was a French illustrator and painter of battles and panoramas. He was a pupil of Eugène Delacroix.
Born: 31 May 1835 in Saint-Omer (Pas-de-Calais)
Died: 19 May 1885 in Paris
When studying engineering in Brittany, Alphonse de Neuville starts to get interested in painting. Already at the age of 24, after having attended the school of the Parisian historical painter François-Édouard Picot and later Eugène Delacroix, he attracts quite some attention at the Paris Salon. The painting “Episode from the Franco-Prussian War” depicts in its moving richness in detail, painted in muted colors, Neuville’s typical way of dealing with war and battle scenes. As he has participated the Franco-Prussian War (1870–1871), he has seen them well enough. So, he becomes a sought-after painter of this genre.
